Ely -

The 025-905-205K distributor fits the very late 84-85 Wasserboxers (from VIN 25-E-155001), is the replacement distributor for the 83.5-Early 84 Wassers and does indeed take the 04 170 rotor. Heavier duty than the 04 038, the 04 170 has a larger/longer tracking metal piece on the end. I have tried to use 04 038 rotors to save a couple of bucks, but they don't last very long, at least not near as long as the proper 04 170 rotor.

For a matter of reference, all Wassers use the 04 170 rotor thru the end of production, as well as very late VW Watercooled applications, very late Audi, Hyundai (Huh?),and Volvo.

04 038 rotors were used on Air Cooled applications using a Hall Distributor 79-83, as well as a host of other Earlier VW WaterCooled applications, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes and Volvo.

Don't worry about the hole size, it's proper and should be a snug fit, provided it's an Original Bosch Part and not some Taiwan rip-off using Bosch's numbers.
