Here's some USA/Canadian specs (courtesy of Vanagon Bentley): 80-83 Vanagons Federal using Points: Secondary Resistance 6K to 12K Ohms 80-83 California Vanagons, 83.5-91 Wasser Vanagon with Hall Distributors: Secondary Resistance: 2.4K to 3.5K Ohms Remember, these specs are for USA and Canadian Market Models. Models overseas may have different specs and may not be compatible with your setup. Typically more coil (secondary) resistance may lead to a poorer spark with your US spec Hall Module on the firewall and Hall Generator in the distributor. I do agree with Ken Wilford that the coil off of a Rabbit/Jetta (80-84 w/ Hall Units) will work just fine, because it's the same coil as in your Westy (Bosch 00 041). The 85-93 Golf & 85-90 Jettas use a Bosch 00 061 Coil which I've heard is a slightly heavier duty version of the 00 041 coil, so it will probably work as well (in fact, it is specified in Bosch for the 85-87 and 90-91 Vanagons - the 88-89 Vanagons use a 00 074 coil, but all of these have the same secondary resistance as noted above).
