Volks,
I am now the proud owner of a mint 1991 GL Westfalia and therefore must
move one of my 3 Vanagons out of the driveway, and alas I must let my 82
Diesel Westy be the one to go:
Particulars:
General:
I purchased it last July 97 to do a full restore, this restore has been
mostly completed, but I have concentrated on the Mechanical side of the
restoration, therefore, cosmetically this Westy is about say a 6.5 on a
scale of 1 to 10. Mechanically, 1.6 diesel starts instantly always, and
runs strong, according to PO it was rebuilt about 5K miles ago.
Mechanically, I'd say an 8 on a scale of 10, no known problems, just a
16 year old piece of equipment.
Particulars: (All within the last 9 months)
I have done the following:
Rebuilt Starter last summer
Radiator recored
Engine belt pulley replaced
Coolant system flushed/filled
New timing belt
New alternator belt
-All- fuel lines replaced
New front Brakes December (rotors and pads)
4 Wheel alignment last month
4 off lable tires last summer
Repainted by PO: Blue
All forward water hoses replaced
Steering Rack boots
New thermostat
Needs:
small dent right rear corner panel
some painted surfaces peeled off when PO's terrible pinstriping removed
rear bumper is "ruffly"
Rear sheet metal under bumper similarly "ruffly"
no wheel covers
slight oil leak from somewhere in the engine: only a few drops, and it
only produces this after a run. I have not had to add any oil in about 4
K miles driving.
Top speed 63 MPH, it is a Westy Diesel!
Odometer OOC
Engine protection plate has some separation near bolt holes causing it
to rattle at certain idling speeds.
Headliner and some of the interior "wall paper" is wrinkled and needs
replacement.
Overall, this Diesel Westy is ready for a trip, I would have no problem
taking it cross country for mechanically it is in very good shape. Runs
good, shifts good, straight driving. No wrecks. I have only used the
fridge on 12Vand it does work fine. All Westfalia stuff there. Tent in
good condition. In summary it is a project Diesel Westy that received
only about 70% of the attention planned before a much younger/prettier
model happend along....
I have all reciepts and hope to get $3,500 out of it. If you have plans
for a GTI or TDI Westy, this one can work, and until then the 1.6l is in
fine shape.
