IMHO you can use the steel wheel for a spare, but if you get a flat, i would change it back to the alloy wheel asap. it is important to keep uniform tread depth on all 4 wheels with a syncro. otherwise, you put added strain on the VC...it engages when it should not and gets hot...which can cause premature failure, it seems. So, rotate the alloys frequently....every 5000 miles at least. I got over 40,000 miles on Michellin MXL's...with even wear and some life in them yet. I now have MXT's, the replacement forr the MXL's (hope i got this right) ...they are a heavier tire with increased load range and max pressure of 50lbs. I like 'em. steve 90 syncro westy
