<< I'm looking for some advice on my 94 Golf.

I took it into Ray Fladeboe VW Dealership, in Irvine Ca, due to the 'check engine' light coming ON. They say the O2 sensor is causing the problem & say for $299, they can install a new O2 sensor. This would be the third O2 for the Golf. The original O2 sensor was replaced with a 2nd O2 sensor under warranty at 47K. The car now has 70K.

My questions:

1) Is the 02 sensor replacement something I could do on my own? Thus saving me the obvious labor cost of having them do it.

2) Are there any advantages of having them install a new 02 sensor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please email me directly. Thanks.

>> Durby, first of all what was the fault in the system causing the check engine light to come on ? I doubt it was on O2 sensor fault unless the fault was something like" O2 sensor no response " or " heated curcuit malfunction", if this is the case, I would make sure that the wireing is good to the O2 sensor connector. I have seen tons of problems with one of the wires breaking at the connector on 93 to 95 Golf Jettas. On the 96 or newer cars, I'm having to replace one of the O2 sensors ( there's two, one before and after the CAT.) constantly. If it is a O2 fault, have them check on the VW 1551 diagnosis 08 measureing block (engine electronics) 001 channel 3 and see if there's any O2 sensor activity, it should fluctuate between .97 to 1.03 . If it is, the have them erase the fault, pick up the car and don't worry about until the check engine light comes on again with the same fault , offcourse. If it's not an O2 sensor fault, I would like to know what the fault is, I know your car inside and out. Michael.
