Subject: Driving Recommendations Appalachian Mts
Comments: To: Vanagon@vanagon.com

All, I'm currently planning to drive the van from Iowa to North Carolinas' Outer banks this coming July. I've calculated that the trip will be approximately 1200 miles one way taking 22 hours at 55mph. My thoughts are either:

1.) going to Indy then south through KY, TN and then NC

2.) Continuing east through Indy into OH, then head south through WV, VA then NC

Either way I have to get over or through the Appalachian Mts. Now I've driven a car through the Appalachians and Rockies, but it's a little more powerful and much newer...I didn't have any problems.

But I've never driven the van (aka Tootsie) on mountains roads!

So what can I expect???? What routes would you recommend?? Include camping areas. How much time should I a lot for the mountain segment of the trip?

Tootsie doesn't have a tach, she's an automatic. The coolant gauge is about all I can watch which hovers just left of middle when going down I-80 (read midwest rolling hills to flat terrain) at 60mph. Should over heating be my biggest worry? Would I be better staying on interstate and/or national highways?
