At $26.95 each (my price), the lifetime-warranted KYB's are really hard to beat. They are the most popular "performance" shock for the Vanagon. I'm very happy with them on my '89 Westy, and liked them on my prior Westy (an '85) as well. The Bilsteins are arguably better, but for closer to $100 each they're certainly not a great value.
