Subject: changing temp II sensor
Comments: To: Vanagon@vanagon.com

Just changed this puppy with the instructions from the list (no doubt in the archives by now). What worries me is that after running the van with the new sensor in place, the expansion tank level didn't seem like it went down enough to make up for the stuff I splashed out. I hope there's not an air bubble somewhere.

The van does run a bit smoother with less warm up, but that could be wishful thinking.

As an update to the compression test, it seems the open throttle does make a considerable difference and I have at least 3 cylinders with 120 psi. The 4th (actually #3) is only about 75, which is right on the border of max difference (44 according to Bentley). I'll try again fully hot next time. Oh well, it runs well enough. :-)

Anyway, to all attepting the temp II sensor change...it's not that hard. I used an upside-down trash can lid to catch the coolant and I got all of it (none for animals to lick up). I did have to reach in there and pull the sealing ring out, but no big deal. Be prepared for lots of smoke after you start back up because the exhaust system is right under the thermostat housing.
