The daytime running lights (headlights) on my 96 Suzuki Sport  are actually the
main halogen headlight bulb, but being run throught a different power circuit
such that the volts/amps  is greatly reduced, making the expensive halogen bulbs
last considerably longer, yet keep you noticed.
You idea of "economical" off-roading lights sounds good.
