Subject: Setting a price on Synchro
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII
This discussion reminds me of when I called a certain motor rebuilder (will
not name him) and asked him how much he would pay for a waterboxer motor with
blown gaskets. He replied that he had bought one for $50 before at a
junkyard. My point is that yes maybe you could find a synchro or maybe even a
couple at a very bargain price from someone who doesn't know what they are
worth or is covering up some major defect with the van and setting a lower
price to make himself feel better, but really the van is worth as much as
someone is willing to pay for it.
That is the bottom line.
I had a '81 VW Caddy (Rabbit pickup) and the paint was dull looking but the
body was very solid and it ran good so I wanted $1500 for it. I put it out by
the side of the road near where I lived with the $1500 on the windshield in
shoe polish and also advertised it on the internet. I got all kinds of
ridicule from the local yokels about how the truck wasn't worth $1500 (one guy
even called trying to haggle and he thought the sign said $500!) but that
didn't make me change my price because I knew what the truck was worth to the
right person. Well if you can wait the right person will come along and about
6 months later I had 15 Ben Franklins staring at me and the guy that bought
the truck was happy as a lark.
So don't get discouraged. Sure you can get a deal from time to time but those
are the exceptions not the rule. If you don't need the money to live and are
not in a rush then set your price and just wait. Works for me every time.
