If you have a Jetta (probably Golf, too), there's a big baffled relay way up
on the fuse panel. Yank it and the DRLs stop working. Now the headlight
switch actually will turn on the headlights when you need them. The other
lights are still on -- side markers, running lights -- so if you want to go
totally light-free, buy the German switch and pop it in. I did this on my
'96 GLX and was much happier not dorking around Utah with my lights on.
Another cool thing about the German switch is that the pull-out fog switch
it two-way: First position, front fog lights. Second pull, rear fog
lights! Legal note: Don't do any of this if your local laws prohibit it --
which mine did not.
Note to Sudhir: DRLs don't use "low-watt" bulbs, in any application I know
of. The Canada rule is to drive the regular bulbs at 4 watts, in the US
manufacturers are pushing 6 watts.
