Mark: My _guess_ is that it is not necessary, everything else being equal. The first generation of FI on the Vanagons didn't have an O2 sensor; if the car was setup properly, and nothing changed, then the FI should supply the "proper" mixture over the operating range. The O2 sensor provides feedback to the ECU for fine-tuning of the mixture, so if everything was adjusted properly before, replacing the sensor shouldn't affect anything. In fact, the adjustment of CO is done with the sensor out of the loop.
