To answer some of the questions put forth:
For my swap I kept the Vanagon power steering pump. I used a a/c bracket
that the VW dealer gave me to mount it. There shouldn't be a reason why
you can't use the existing pump. It is a problem if you have a Syncro and
want to keep the factory skid plates.
Alternator brackets are all stock Rabbit/Fox on my engine.
I am using the Audi Fox dual outlet manifold on my swap. The inline four
VW engines take very well to free flowing exhausts. I would definatly try
to get the Audi Fox / Dasher manifold and the down pipe. If you mount the
dp "backwards" and bend it up slightly it is a perfect fit. The dual
outlet VW Rabbit manifold should work if you have someone who good at
bending exhaust pipe.
Another thing I strongly recommend. Replace the crank shaft oil seal.
Something like $10 for the seal but with $500 knowing that it isn't going
to leak any time soon.
