To all who've contemplated this retrofit:

Awhile back I installed the Carat rear table (*not* a Westy table) in place of the middle bench seat in my '89 Syncro Weekender (got the table used from Sorin at California Campers.) I originally tried to use the plastic interior mounting panel that comes with it in place of the fiberboard interior panel. DON'T DO IT, unless you also plan to replace your back bench seat, which is too wide by about 2 inches to get past the panel and the table itself when the table is folded down and the seat is pulled out as a bed. Hooray for German Engineering.

This was a major pain in the ass for me, as I didn't want to spring for a new Carat rear seat (and wasn't confident it would also be compatible with the Weekender seat mounts) and I drove around for a year and a half with the table up and no interior panel installed.

This last weekend I finally fixed the whole thing by removing the table and its horizontal mounting frame, reattaching the table into its frame 11 inches farther forward (eliminating interference with the pulled out bed) and reinstalling the whole assembly, then tossing out the plastic paneling and reinstalling the fiberboard interior panel with a table-shaped hole cut out of it. (Actually, I saved the section of the plastic panel with the table "well" and its latch bracket and mounted it behind the hole in the fiberboard, so the table still seats and latches snug.) Voila!

Combined with my new swivel front seats (ask me about how I got 360 degree swivel on the driver's side!) I've got the van all set up for our Canyonlands trip this next week. Whoo-hoo!
