Subject: Things I have to Do Before I drive to Alaska....

Hello All,

First, I want you all to know how great it is to be back from Saudi Arabia where they don't even know what VW is.....I really missed the list. And, now I must consult the wisdom of all of you to help me prepare my 86 Vanagon for the trek to the great north...ALASKA!

I just got the heads done (gaskets were pissing)..and had the rings and stuff done too. Now it's up to me to get things really ready....

First thing is the A/C.....gotta drive across the states in July so gotta have it. I have the receiver drier and now I need a compressor. I've seen a couple messages about some aftermarket replacements and would like more info....I'm gonna go ahead a replace all the o-rings too. SO....anybody got an A/C Compressor for sale...CHEAP?

Second thing......when I first bought the van four years ago...I put passenger tires on it.....yeah yeah...but I didn't know about the list and have since learned what I need to do. I'm gonna probably replace all four...and am toying with the idea of alloy wheels, too. They don't have to be VW ( would be nice though) ....SO.....does anybody have any of those out there....CHEAP?

Note: Please pardon the use of the word CHEAP. Being a lowly enlisted guy in the military, I am bound by contract to accept only the lowest bid for any contract.

Third thing.....I DO NOT want to drive this van 5800 miles with my foot on the pedal the whole way. There's limited info available on cruise controls lately....has anyone done this to a Vanagon....recently? NEED INPUT!!!!

Fourth thing..... this had got to be one of the all time great adventures for any Vanagon ....has anyone else out there done this.....I would love to hear from you for stories/advice.....

I thank you all in advance....I have learned some great things from you all.....I hope that its enough to get me to Anchorage.
