Well, it could be like my '81 van and have rusted through in the area around the windshield seal... for your sake, I hope not. If you have any rust at all around the windshield it's time to get paranoid. The winshield seal channel appears to have been designed with planned obsolescence in mind, as it's a V shape, so that any water that gets in there has absolutely no place to go, and can spend the next few years patiently rusting its way into the interior.

I've acquired a second car for the specific purpose of parking the van so that I can weld new metal into that windshield area. It will take me a long time just to get to the point of trying it, since I have about 3 hours of welding experience so far... and it's a nasty little area there, where two pieces of very contoured metal are spot-welded together to form the inner lip of the V.
