Subject: Syncro transmission housing..missing something??

After getting underneath my syncro and giving it the once over, I noticed that there are three holes on the right side of the front piece right after the connection to the drive shaft (looking front to back).

I checked the Bentley's and couldn't find anything that should be bolted on there.

I'm wondering if this section came from another vehicle (diesel or non syncro) which had holes for two small screws and a large bore in the middle. There is also a bore from the side as well (on the right side, looking front to back).

I couldn't get around to the side of the vehicle where the holes are (small garage and vehicle was up against the wall and I'll to big to get under the skid bars!!), so I didn't have a good look from the side, but looking front to back I'm looking at two small screws and a large bore on the beginning of the transmission housing, after the connection with the drive shaft.

Can anyone tell me what this might be? And if I'm missing something, what's the risk that its allowing grime into the transmission (though I cludn't see from my angle any penetration of the transmission housing).

Thanks!
