Subject: Changing Filter Not During Oil Change
Comments: To: Vanagon <VANAGON@VANAGON.COM>

Hi all -

Not a problem at all to change filters at anytime. Just take off the old filter and install a new one. Just a few drips will come down.

I had a filter so loose on my ex-Vanagon

(how loose was it! the audience gamely asks)

It was sooo loose that it took two turns to make contact with the seal! It leaked just a little.

I was hunting for oil leaks that ended up on the rear hatch. This loose filter was dripping a small amount onto the exhaust, but the larger culprit was leaky push rod seals.

And since Subaru engines are becomming sorta topical on this list, I changed the filter on my Subaru (it's horizontal, not vertical BTW) after finding a leak in the seam of the filter itself, again, only a few drips.
