The low gear is also great in stop-n-go traffic jams the kind that streach on for miles. You can put it in granny gear and it will creep along at idle (up small hills, even) at such a slow speed that by the time your catch up to the car in front of you, they're beginning to move...and thus you just creep along at idle while everyone else stops...goes....stops....goes....saves a little on the clutch and frustration...heck, I even went to the back of the bus to get something once while it continued to creep along at idle (did this on I-80 in nevada at 65 mph...on cruise control...no cars in sight of me...flat, straight road as far as the eye can see...always wanted to try it...before I did it I drove with no hands for 3 miles while sitting in the driver's seat....car steered itself).
