In September of 1996 I completed a five day trip across Nevada on US
Route 50 - by bicycle.  Not unlike a trip in my Vanagon it was slow
uphill and the side winds were tricky.  It was however, very beautiful as
well as remote.  From Lake Tahoe to the Utah border the scenery changed
every day revealing panoramic vistas unlike anything back east.

Whenever possible I choose the older roads over the Interstates when
traveling with my 1981 Westfalia.  I am not going to get there that fast
anyway so why not?  Getting off the Interstate allows you see more, eat
real, not corporate, food(!), and meet the people.

So assuming that Route 50 is passable, your itinerary allows, and your
spirit of adventure is intact - spend the time traveling the old roads.
I'd do it again in a minute.  BTW - there was a nice looking Forrest
Service campground at the top of the mountain pass just east of Austin,
worth a look.
