Subject: factory cruise

Hey volks, My foot ackes! I have a sort of half functioning factory cruise set up in my '88 vanagon. When I engage the system it seems okay, but when we start going up an incline, steep or shallow, it doesn't have enough pressure to give itself the extra gas. I find myself continually having to encourage it, which I feel defeats the purpose of cruise control. I have looked pretty deeply in the archives and have come up with a couple of ideas along with those in THE bently. I first thought it might be the throttle arm from the diaphram, so I tightened it up as much as I could while keeping the idle constant. Then I checked the diaphram itself, disconnected the pump hose, pressed the diaphram in, and it kept, no wholes. I checked the hoses, they seem to be fine. I also checked the release valves on the clutch and brake levers, I have a manual tranny. Brake clicks, clutch faintly clicks. I don't really know how to check the speed regulator which in attached to the speedometer. From what I gather it operates magnetically (?) somehow. Is there a way I can pin point this as a default. Is there a way I can check the pump to see how much pressure it is producing. I figure it has something to do with either the pump not producing enough suction to increase the tension on the throttle lever or something to do with the speed indicator. I would like to keep the cruise in, although faily inefficient here in vt, but its always a nice break. any suggestion with be greatly appreciated. sorry a little jumbled and long
