Subject: Rear Heater Removal and Replacement
Comments: To: Vanagon <vanagon@vanagon.com>

In my 84 Westfalia, I have removed the rear, under-seat, heater to replace the valve which was leaking from the stem. The valve is a sealed unit, unique to the wasserboxer, according to one of our List suppliers.

In the interim, I placed between the hoses a homemade 1/2 "U" sweated from 4" lengths of 1/2" rigid copper tubing while I attached the valve to the core, being conscious of the warning from a List member to be aware of the danger to the coolant pump by this temporary attachment. I drained the core to prepare it for the attachment of the valve, and obviously, upon reinstallation of the core, I will have introduced into the cooling system a section devoid of coolant and containing an air pocket. I will have vented as much air as possible from the core by accessing the bleed valve on top of the core.

Questions:

1. Is there a way to insure the elimination of air from the historically sensitive VW cooling system after the foregoing process without bleeding the entire system?

2. Can anyone offer any suggestions and hints, or caveats or other cautions on this process?

Thanks,

Tom Hanlon Palm Springs. CA 84 Westfalia
