Because it's SO much easier to check and adjust it NOW, when you have the engine out, then later, when you would have to remove the engine again, to do it.

The endplay changes due to mechanical wear and tear. The shims can get thinner, over time, from the friction, the bearings and everything get some wear on them, etc etc...

I would recommend it, just because you CAN.:) But then, it's your bus, and your engine...:) I dont check mine everytime I have it out, but I do yank on my pulley, everynow and again, to make sure I haven't had any drastic change...:)
