Thanks for all the great suggestions on the tailgate struts. I ended up taking some 3/4" PVC pipe, that same stuff I use for all the underground sprinkler lines, and making the "supports" as suggested by Erik O and Karl Bloss. Worked like a charm. At some point, I'll probably replace them with new structs (thanks, Jim), but having just bought the vehicle, I'd rather apply some triage to where I put money.

I have some questions based on a pleasent Sunday afternoon of investigating and cleaning the bus, but will check archives first.

Being part of this whole wonderful vanagon community is great fun--are you sure we're not all doing something illegal? (-:
