Would like to share a problem that happen to me, so It doesn't happen to you.I have a 1983 water cooled Vanagon that I bought new.A few days ago after getting it out of the shop for brake and wheel bearing problems, I was driving in rush hour traffic and the Van just quit and there was smoke coming from the engine. The Van was on fire, after putting the fire out with my new shirt.I saw that the wiring harness to the fuel injectors was burned up. After closer inspection I found out why. The coil wire was fused to the wiring harness. So bottom line wrap the coil wire several times with electrical tape where it touches the fuel injector wiring harness.
