Welcome to the world of the 11-year-old VW.

The black foam, that now will be part of your motoring life for a couple of
years, is the remains of various edges and insulation from the air/heat
system. Most notably, this stuff was around the edges of blend doors. My '85
started spewing foam a few years back, and most of it now comes out as powder.

It doesn't seem to cause any lack of performance, although when I have the A/C
set to "small snowflake, only in your face" I feel some leakage, as if I have
it set on "snowflake in your face, and on your feet".
