martin,

to add my .02: from what i can remember, when we took our 82 1.6 diesel to 1.6 td, fabricating the left motor mount was the most practical and cost-effective method to clear the turbo. i believe we just took a bunch of measurements of what we needed and the mount to a friend that was really good at welding and it came out beautiful. one big advantage was that in this process we also could get the motor down further in the van as far as we needed to clear the access hatch at the top of the engine bay. this was done about three years ago and is still working great.

to add to the diesel thread, i remember the great deceleration uphill (kind of like hitting one of those runaway truck ramps) but with turbo now i actually can accelerate uphill. also, not mentioned is the unbelievable reliability of these motors. vw makes a bullet proof diesel. the bottom end of these things are strong.
