Kevin, your syncro is running cooler because your heater core is, in essence, just a small radiator. when the temp lever is on cold no water is running through the core, when the lever is on hot you have engine coolant running through the core. when you turn the fan on it blows through the core, just like the cooling fan behind the radiator in your syncro, thus adding a little more cooling ability to your engine.
