I doubt if that color was an authentic Vanagon color >>

it was original. the van started out life as a Kombi (commercial bare bones model - no headliner, or glove box, just a open parcel tray, no carpet, black bumpers, no clock, yada, yada...), which were always painted solid colors - most different colors than were offered on the regular passenger models. Then was shipped to Vancouver WA to Automotive Services Inc (ASI) for their camper conversion. IMO, ASI's were better equipped than Westy's (depending on which camper model you got) My friend's '80 ASI Camper got the topline camper conversion that ASI offered - cant think of the name now, but it included: propane heater, a drive-away tent (tho PO "lost" it) dual batt setup, and a few more goodies that weren't offered on vgon delux westys.
