Joseph,
They work by bleeding current to ground (the big tab). In so doing, they
generate heat. Lots of it. Sooo, you need to have a REALLY good connection to
keep them cool. A bad ground (not detectable by a VOM) will cause them to go
bad. I too went through MANY of them. Finally my buddy Dan Houg from Bemidji
put together a little external variable voltage regulator circuit which I
wired in and adjusted. It's been working ever since.
