Reading directly from the Bosch book: "Vanagon, 2100cc, Manual 2WD Starter # SR401X" "Vanagon, 2100cc, 4WD Starter #SR401X" This is for an '87 on. Both versions to 11/86 can use either an SR19X or a 401X.

So the same replacement starter fits all watercooled Vanagons with standard trans.
