Yesterday I was talking to the owner of a 1985 camper with an automatic transmission. This van has 150k miles on it and the transmission won't shift out of low. The problem came on gradually, taking longer and longer to up-shift, now it just stays in low. He has had it to several shops, but no one can tell him what might be wrong without tearing it apart and quoting prices from $500 to $1500 to fix. In an effort to fix the problem, the owner has drained the unit, removed the pan and installed a new filter screen and new fluids. He says he did not find any metal in the pan, but did find some brown plastic pieces. His mechanic says the brown plastic pieces are from some "sleeve" VW puts in and they are replaced by metal sleeves when the transmission is rebuilt. Anybody have a similar problem or have an idea what is wrong? Thanks for any help.
