After a long absence from the list, VW Nut is back... I'm glad to see many of the same "faces" are still here :-)

An update: I've moved back to my old school, our daughter Josie just turned one, and we still have our '88 Westy and '85 Jetta TD, both running well at 347k and 395k respectively. I'm also hosting the Olympus camera mailing list, in case any listees here are also Oly users. My web pages for VW stuff, the Olympus List, and Photos are now at: http://Zuiko.sls.bc.ca/~swright

Now, on to the VW stuff: The front end on our Westy has become loose feeling, and shudders when coming going over large dips at speeds above 80km or so. (shuddering occurs during the downward motion). In addition, the passenger side control arm bushings have been squeaking for a few years now, and on one of them, I can see shiny metal between the bushing and the A-arm.

My questions are: what other components are subject to wear with high mileage, and could cause this shuddering and looseness? I plan to replace the shocks, possibly before our next trip in a few weeks. The looseness problem seems to have worsened after two years of driving on mostly rough logging roads. Choices for shocks seem to be: Cofap oil or KYB gas. Are the gas shocks too harsh for logging roads? How about longevity?

Thanks!
