I presume that trip was in their Vanagon.  There are references to how
the parents used camping to try and spend time with their troubled
child.

The father even tried to turn the kid's gun interest into something
healthy by teaching him to properly use rifles.

I was not interested in the van, but I did wonder whether they were
listmembers.  And it was chilling that this happened to a westfalia
family.
