I was under the impression that the R-134a was less efficient than the R-12, so if you converted the A/C would be slightly worse. Though, having recently had my Vanagon charged with R-12 at a (dealer) cost of $200, I can see how the R-134a is compelling.

Anyone want to comment on the truth that the R-134a lowers the cooling ability of the A/C?
