Subject: Need help with blinking coolant overtemperature light

My 84 camper has been blowing the voltalge stabilizer about once a month for the last six months. I would loose the temp. gauge and the fuel gauge in the usual manner. Sometimes when the stabilizer was about to blow and the voltage dropped down to around 8 volts, the red light would begin to blink. I now have a heavy duty 10v regulator in its place, and it hasn't blown yet. I have a 1 amp. fuse in the line just in case.

Things started OK, but after about an hour of driving the red light started blinking and won't go out like it should after starting. The temperature gauge and the fuel gauge are operating normally. I have read everything in the archives that I can find.

One message said that the coolent level sensor should read 31K to 65K ohms and that too much antifreeze could cause the light to blink. I tried unpluging the cable from the sensor and shunting a resistor in this range across the plug. The light still blinks.

One message said that the cool low level warning control unit should be replaced, and that it was located behind the fuse panel. I removed the fuse panel and unpluged every little box one by one. The light still continued to blink. I never could find anything that I thought was the low level warning control unit. The Bentley on page 97.10 shows the Fuse/relay panel and indicates what each of the relays are, but doesn't show a coolant low level warning control unit.

I have red the Bentley from cover to cover trying to find the location of the low level warning control unit so that I could see about replacing it. One message I read said that a change was made around 86 to move the low level warning control unit to a board in the dash, but I have an 84.

HELP! I'm afraid to use the van for an extended trip because I can't tell if I have a problem or not. Any ideas would be appreciated!

George
