Not trying to be argumentative, but...... the previous answers were 100% correct, they just didn't mention the thermostat. It doesn't matter where you take the coolant from, the head, the the block, heck, tap into the radiator itself, you are still increasing the size of the cooling system when you allow coolant into the heater core. Taking it before the thermostat, as you noted, only serves to provide heat more quickly.
