Now that I've gotten over the initial excitement of bringing the new/old Vanagon home, I've had some time to go over it a bit more objectively.

Oil buzzer problem seems OK with a topping out of the oil and a few wiggles on the send units. Keeping fingers crossed. Oil change to occur after I get my hands on a non-Fram oil filter (dealer was not available this weekend).

I found a Purolator from my Fox days in the garage. Should I try this (it is the correct part for Vanagons) or does it, in the collective experience of the group, cause the same pressure drop problems as the Fram?

Changed the air filter just to do something mechanical (I already washed and waxed and vacuumed the thing) until the Bentley book arrives.

It seems that it took a shot in the right rear at some point: the hatch is not perfectly aligned and there is some rust over the right rear fender lip. However, the hatch seals are holding under garden hosing so I'll leave it alone unless someone has a way to align this without screwing it up worse.

What's with that fiberglass Carat trim? It's in pretty good shape except for the piece on the bottom of sliding door. It looks as if someone tried to open the door in a garage with no clearance.

Do I remove and repair it? Is there an aftermarket supplier of this stuff? Or do I go to the FLAD and pray that I find a Carat which was crushed from above? Does anyone have experience with this?

Also, why does everyone seem to try straight 30 weight oil in their vehicles? Is this a vestige of the old John Muirisms regarding multi-viscosity and non- detergent oils?

Oh well, I better stop asking questions, and maybe figure out a way to answer some before I end up in inquiry receivership.

Thanks to all who answered my first set of questions.

Paul 89 Carat (it feels good be able to type that)
