VW used front-mounted A/C units up to the '86 model years, and these are not subject, since they lack the two bits of plastic affected (the center and rear ducts). They did not care about the driver: "If the plastic breaks where it is held at the two mounting screws, the center air flow duct can separate from its supports and cause injury to the passengers sitting in the center seat of the vehicle."
