John; The "mechanic" (and I use the term loosely) probably was trying to mask an overheating problem! The switch is cheap, fix it. Then get the radiator flushed out at a professional shop to cure the lack of cooling. I have only heard the fan on my transporter come on (high) once in ten years so don't worry about the fan motor!
