Sounds like a coil problem to me as well. Since it's a Federal Model (by the fact that it has points), a coil off of any 12 Volt Bug or a Bosch Blue Coil can be swapped and then checked with the scope. But don't discount a bad spark plug, even if new I've run across a defective plug.

By Eric's description, if the vehicle has points, etc., it has to be a Federal Model unless it's a California having been cobbled together with a mix of California & Federal Parts, a lot like what Marc Edwards out here has been going through lately with a 80 California Westy with a Federal Engine, Ignition FI and Exhaust installed by the DPO that of course won't pass CA regs because it has the CA certificate stamped on the door, but almost none of the items on the "Visual Checklist" are there to pass smog. We're trying to "Californiaize" it now so that he can get the smog passed (it gets worse - he's living in a Smog Check II area).

OK, I'll bite - I figured out what an "ego sensor" is - it's an O2 or Oxygen Sensor. But what (or wot) the H-E-double-toothpick is a "wot sensor"? I just love these "localized" dialects and names for stuff BUT it would help us ignerunt folks to know "wot" you're talking 'bout by using some correct terminology here. Been futzin with FI Buses and Vanagons over 20 years and never heard this term. Maybe someone should setup a glossary of this stuff for easier identification, especially after having to sift thru the "BTDT thread" recently.

BTW (By The Way) - Federal Air Cooled models don't have the O2 (ego) sensor - only CA models had these.
