Subject: connecting rod bolts on 2.1L wasserboxer engine
Comments: To: vanagon@vanagon.com

Hello- After a nice vacation, I return to my first top end rebuild of an engine. Before attempting to reassmble everything, I ran across a discussion in the Haynes manual about the two types of connecting rod bolts available in the UK (though there was no mention of dates of production). When I reexamined the Bentley, I didn't find the usual note as to replace the bolts nor did I find two types of bolts listed for the watercooled engines (in fact, the Bentley does not discuss the 1.9 crank and its attachments as the book says these parts have been superceded by the 2.1 crank and its attachments). Does anyone know if the connecting rod bolts on the 2.1L waterboxer engine are of the stretch type? I am about to begin to reassemble my engine, and need to sort this out before I can start. I am somewhat relucant to replace them for the simple reason that I do not have a shop press which appears to be required to reinstall the bolts (and it appears I would need a larger vise to improvise)...

dave
