Bob, I did this just a couple of weeks ago. While changing the water pump, I removed the AC compressor (and belt), made the job <much> easier and the engine seemed to sigh with relief, decided not to reinstall, no problems. Actually, my nephew and niece removed the entire AC system from their Syncros, including the front radiator and all the hoses, duct work, etc. My AC wasn't working and did not have any freon in it, I would suggest that if your system is not empty, then you should have it purged by a shop that can recover the freon.
