Subject: Aircooled rebuilds sources -- advice?

Hi. I'm new to the Vanagon list with the purchase of a '82 Westy, which I bought for it's straight body, despite a very troubled motor. This weekend I found dropped it and discovered just how troubled: Exhast vavle seat popped on #1, recession on others, lots of oil leaks and general signs of ham-fisted use and maintenance (thermostat not connected, mismatched bolt head sizes, etc....) Given the overall dubious state of the thing and some time constraints (it sits in borrowed garage space) I'm leaning towards a longblock. I found an offer that sound too good to be true at:

Anybody know of a better deal, or more important, a RELIABLE rebuilt source. This van has a great body and lots of potential, so I want to get it up and running right. Advice, dissent and kibbitzing welcome.

BTW, the van has a fairly sano conversion to a Weber (it fits under the stock hatch). I have NO idea where to start tuning the thing, as I know lots about fuel injection while carbs are Voudun to me!

The plausibility of a proposition does not effect it's verity; and vice versa. Heinlein
