I didn't get into the carb replacement thread much but read enough that
it looks like most everyone agrees that keeping the stock efi EFI is a
good thing. I thought I would throw out another thought. A friend of
mine has developed a system for putting CIS injection on type 1 engines
with very good success. It was interesting to me to see him take a stock
1600 and run it with his system and then remove it and reinstall it on a
built 2180 and it ran perfectly with no adjustments. It seems that the
mechanical nature of this style injection automaticlly senses what is
needed so the fuel mixture is correct. With this system you don't have
the electonic problems. He uses Bosch parts from Rabbits for his system.

The downfall of this system is that is is bulky. I don't know if it
could be squeezed into a Vanagon. We are currently putting one into a
'65 crewcab with a 2076 engine. Should be interesting.
