Second try as the reprevious one came to my account with a body of << No Message Collected >>

Well, there is another not-so-pretty test... Jack up one of the rear wheels under the swing arm with a trolley floor jack. Put a small log in front of one of one of the front wheels. Try to drive over it very slowly in low gear. If you make, you VC works, if not, it doesn't ;) Like I said, it's the not-so-pretty test and you could screw up the rear end - there is a good possibly that the trolley jack could get stuck in a crack in whatever surface you are preforming the test. If you don't get the jack in line with the direction of motion, it may slip out from under the rear wheel and damage something in the area (like a drive shaft or a brake line). But it is the only test I have seen that will simulate the back end losing traction (well, I suppose it doesn't really simulate it) and the log provides resistance to verify that the VC itself is locking and that the forward or reverse motion is not being transmitted through the VCs seals (the torque at which these things slip is in the archives I believe - I could be confusing this with the torque needed to overcome the resistance introduced by the final drive seals in both the front and rear diffs when performing the front tire rotation test). It was suggested by another list member who name escapes me as I wouldn't have thought of doing this.
