Years ago, I noticed an interesting feature with the oil pressure light in my Fox. It would blink....if the instrument cluster was in the dark, but if there was a bright light (such as sunshine on it), it would stay on solid, instead of blinking. I don't know if the Vanagon's idiot light works the same way or not.
