Subject: sticky steering

I just got an '87 Vanagon at a salvage auction that has been hit pretty lightly in the front (I assume it rear-ended someone). Aside from damage to the radiator (which I replaced) and crumpled sheet-metal (which I will live with), the only remain issue seems to be sticky steering. It steers fine, except that it doesn't return to center. The steering transfer gear did get banged, but there's no visible damage to it, and it's not binding anywhere I can see. But it's not entirely smooth when I turn the wheel with the wheels jacked up; I can (barely) feel the gears working.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there a way to adjust the steering, make it looser? Does it sound like the transfer gear is shot?

Thanks.

-David
