Subject: Why's my oil filter leaking?

Thought I'd finally fixed the persistent oil leak in my '81 Vanagon when I pulled the engine and found that one of the nuts on the oil cooler had worked itself off. But I'm still leaking oil!!!!

It looks to me like the oil is leaking over the top of the oil filter. I've tried taking it off several times, sometimes screwing it on as hard as I can, sometimes not-so-hard, but it still looks like it's leaking.

Because of the position of the oil filter I can't get more than my fingertips on it; should I get one of those oil filter wrenches and try tightening it some more, or does anyone have any other thoughts?

TIA.
