<< Van folks,
One would think that after 16 years of working on and dealing in VW vans I
had
seen everything and knew what to look for when buying a used car, but some
unscrupulous person still managed to pull the wool over my eyes when he sold
me a '93 Eurovan Multivan weekender camper I just bought. The seller claimed
it had a new water-pump, seals, timing belt etc., and initially it did drive
good, but a week later, the automatic transmission quit shifting. It will go
into reverse and it will go forward, but it seems like it's in second or
third
gear at start-off, and will not shift at all. It doesn't seem like it's
slipping. I was hoping some-one out there would be able to shed some light on
this, and give me some advice, or maybe some-one has a used auto trans out of
a wrecked or salvage EV they want to sell me reasonably. I must confess, I've
had only two or three EVs so far, so they're still new to me. Vanagons, I
know
backwards, but this beast, I know little of. I'm sorry to burden you folks
like this, but I'm hoping somebody will point me in the right direction. I
will be most obliged for any info or leads.
Thank you all.
Sincerely,
Vic Ahmed

Ok, lets try this again. The faults need to be checked in the TCM. Most likely
the trans in limp mode. Usually when the fault is cleared, the problem is gone
temperarilly. Faults that you might have is, "Trans range performance" = trans
is slipping and needs a new reman trans, most likely, "Engine trans
electrical connection" = most likely needs a power supply relay. Note that
whatever you do, do not put a used trans in a Eurovan. The design and
longevity of these transmissions are just as unreliable ( most of them ) as
Passat 16V's. There is a possibilty and I would recommend it, that if it gets
to the point of putting a reman trans in that car, that you may want to
include a new TCM also. When there is a minor glitch in those TCM's, it will
eventually ruin you new trans also. Our regoinal REP. for VW would recommend
it also. ( By the way, the design team that designed the Passat auto trans
from 1990 to 1995 , Golf - Jetta 1993 to 1995 and auto Eurovans, have been
fired, because the trans are a peace of S**T. ) The new trans available on
VW's now are wonderfull. Sorry for the bad news.. Let me know what the
faults are, and I'll be able to help you further.
